The 3AM Gallop, Explained
Your cat is not haunted. Your cat is a small crepuscular predator with unfinished business.
At 2:58AM the house is silent. At 3:00AM a creature the weight of a bag of sugar sounds like a horse descending the stairs. This is normal, and it has a name: the night zoomies.
Blame evolution, not the cat
Cats are crepuscular: they hunt most naturally at dawn and dusk. Indoor life removes the hunting but keeps the schedule, which leaves a great deal of energy with nowhere to go except your hallway.
The one-week fix
- Play hard for 10-15 minutes in the evening — wand toy, chase, pounce, catch.
- Feed straight after play. Hunt, eat, groom, sleep is the natural sequence.
- Do not reward the 3AM performance with food, chat, or eye contact. Any response counts as applause.
Do this consistently and most cats shift their gallop earlier within a week. Do it inconsistently and you have taught your cat that persistence pays, which is a lesson he needed no help learning.
